International Credit Union Day
International Credit Union Day®, also known as ICU Day, has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.
ICU day is a chance to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and to promote its achievement. The day honours those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, and recognises the hard work of those working in the credit union industry.
To date, there are 60,500 credit unions worldwide helping 223 million people in 109 countries.
Each year a global theme is established for the day.
ICU Day theme 2016
On 20 October 2016, the 2016 International Credit Union (ICU) Day was celebrated under the theme of ‘The Authentic Difference.’ The theme was designed to highlight the truly unique qualities of credit unions.
The theme set forth and focused attention on the nine principles that separate credit unions from other financial institutions. The principles are democratic control, open membership, non-discrimination, service to members, distribution to members, building financial stability, co-op cooperation, social responsibility and ongoing education.
